12-day Self-Drive Tour in the Baltics

Trip programme:

Day 1: Tallinn
Welcome to Tallinn. Pick-up of the rental car at the airport. Drive to hotel. Check-in. Free time at your disposal. Overnight stay at a hotel in Tallinn.
Day 2: Tallinn
Tallinn’s Old town is one of Europe’s best-preserved walled medieval cities, the historic Old Town of which is included into UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Town Hall Square surrounded by historical merchant houses, St. Catherine’s Guild, the oldest continuously running Town Hall Pharmacy, imposing St. Nicholas Church, the winding romantic alleys, the medieval city walls with cannon towers and Castle Hill are just a few items on what you should see in Tallinn list. Other major sights are only minutes away by car from the city centre: the St. Brigitte’s Monastery in Pirita, the Baroque Kadriorg Castle with its beautiful garden, the KUMU Art Museum and much more. Overnight stay in a hotel.
Day 3: Tallinn - Lahemaa National Park (approx. 86km)
Today brings you a scenic highlight as you drive into Lahemaa National Park, along Estonia’s north coast, beloved for its nature and serenity. Its main sights are the Palmse and Sagadi manors, the ancient fishing village of Altja, the coastal village Käsmu with many erratic boulders and high more of Viru Raba – one of the most accessible bogs in Estonia, passes through the forest and bog landscapes characteristic of Lahemaa National Park.
For tonight’s overnight stay we have chosen something very special for you. You will stay in the majestic former manor house Vihula, surrounded by beautiful nature. Let the day end in a cozy atmosphere.
Day 4: Lahemaa National Park - Rakvere - Tartu (approx. 175km)
The journey continues to Tartu. On the way there are several sights to admire, such as the ruins of Rakvere Castle, the Valaste waterfall, the cliffs of Ontika and many small villages on the Old Believers route, which have preserved their traditional way of life to this day. Arriving in Tartu, check in at a hotel. Overnight stay in Tartu.

Day 5: Tartu
Tartu is a university city in the heart of southern Estonia. The main sights of the city are the fountain in Town Hall Square with its statue of kissing students, the building of the University of Tartu, St. John Church with 1000 well-preserved terracotta sculptures, Tartu observatory and the ruins of the Dome Church, once the largest cathedral in Eastern Europe.

Day 6: Tartu - Gauja National Park - Riga (approx. 260km)
Today you travel to the Gauja National Park. Highlights of the Gauja National Park are the castle ruins in Cesis, the wooden manor house Ungurmuiza, the historic Araisi Lake Fortress, the medieval castles of Turaida and Sigulda, the legendary Gutman’s Cave, Ligatne paper mill village and many more. Continue the journey to Riga. Check-in and overnight at a hotel in Riga.
Day 7: Riga
Riga, the capital of Latvia, was founded more than 800 years ago and is the most cosmopolitan city in the Baltic States.
Enjoy the beauty of the ancient Hanseatic city and visit the Dome Cathedral, the St. Peter’s Church with magnificent views of the city from its steeple, the old Guild Houses, the Swedish Gate, the architectural ensemble Three Brothers, St. Jacob’s Church, Old Riga Castle and Art Nouveau buildings, complete with their fantastically ornate flourishes stand out as unparalleled anywhere in the world. Overnight stay in a hotel in Riga.
 
Day 8: Riga - Rundale - Siauliai - Klaipeda (approx. 335km)
Continue the tour to Rundale Castle. The castle was once the summer residence of Duke Biron of Courland, and is one of the most magnificent baroque buildings in the Baltic States. Next stop – the Hill of Crosses in Siauliai. This place is an exceptional and unique for pilgrims in the world, so it is a must to visit. With many new experiences you continue to Klaipeda. Check-in at the hotel. Afterwards, self-guided tour of the old town of Klaipeda. Overnight stay at a hotel.
Day 9: Excursion to the Curonian Spit (approx. 100km)
Independent exploration of the beautiful Curonian Spit, which is known for its untouched nature with huge shifting sand dunes, thatched fishermen's houses and endless sandy beaches. In the fishing village of Nida, visit the High Dune with sundial, the Protestant church with ethnographic cemetery, the famous Thomas Mann House. Continue your journey towards Juodkrante and make another short detour in Pervalka to the Dead Dune. A visit here is a must. In the fishing village of Juodkrante, explore the cormorant colony, the legendary Witches’ Hill, the old villa district of the former spa town and Amber Bay. Return to Klaipeda. Overnight stay.
 
Day 10: Klaipeda - Kaunas - Trakai - Vilnius (approx. 330km)
After breakfast, drive to Kaunas. Self-guided exploration of Kaunas, which is known for its worth seeing old town, the town hall, the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral and other sights.
Onward journey to Trakai. Trakai is particularly interesting place to see, because of the picturesque landscape and the historic castle of the Lithuanian princes. Then arrival in Vilnius. Check-in at a hotel, overnight stay.
Day 11: Vilnius
The capital of Lithuania surprises with the abundance and variety of its sights. Many churches, the picturesque narrow streets and parks of the Old Town make Vilnius a huge open-air museum. Take a walk through the famous and legendary artists’ quarter “Uzupis”. There is so much to discover here. Overnight stay in Vilnius.
Day 12: Vilnius. Journey home
An impressive journey through the three Baltic countries is coming to an end. Drive to Vilnius airport. Handover of the rental car. Farewell to the Baltic States.
